New British musical & Juliet topped the list of Olivier Awards 2020 nominations with recognition in nine categories.
Once again illustrating the range and diversity of musical theatre currently playing in the West End, the three shows to attract the most Olivier nominations are all genre favourites with Trevor Nunn’s revival of the classic Fiddler On The Roof close behind & Juliet with a total of eight nominations and the contemporary Pasek and Paul musical Dear Evan Hansen on seven.
The Richard Eyre-directed revival of Mary Poppins completes the top four with a total of six nominations including a Best Supporting Actress in a Musical nod for Petula Clark who was last nominated for an Olivier in 1981 for The Sound of Music.
Leading the nominations for plays are the Young Vic’s production of Death of a Salesman, Rosmersholm at the Duke of York’s Theatre and Cyrano De Bergerac at the Playhouse Theatre with five nominations each.
Commenting on the 2020 nominees, Julian Bird, chief executive of the Society of London Theatre and executive producer of the Olivier Awards, said: “2020’s nominations demonstrate the range of productions, talent and enterprise on our stages over the last year, with a mix of breadth and diversity that showcases the modern British theatre landscape. We look forward to celebrating all this incredible, world-leading talent on Sunday 5 April.”
With the winners due to be announced at the ceremony on 5 April 2020 at the Royal Albert Hall, the Nominees’ Celebration will take place on 13 March at The May Fair Hotel (part of Edwardian Hotels London, official hotel partner for the Olivier Awards), in association with Olivier Awards partner Cunard.
The Olivier Awards ceremony, hosted by Jason Manford, will be broadcast via official media partners ITV and Magic Radio. Full details to be announced soon.
